Our Classes

For Adults

We would love you to come along and try our classes. All women are welcome and we aim to keep them affordable. We have wonderful facilitators who are welcoming, encouraging and provide a supportive learning environment. If you have any ideas on classes you would like to see us run or have a skill you would like to teach others please feel free to get in touch with us.

Bellydancing

Mondays for 6 weeks from 9th February     

7.35 to 8.30pm.  $50.00 (sorry no casual rate available for this class)

This class is a fun low impact dance exercise suitable for all fitness levels, shapes and sizes. This is a wonderful way to improve your balance and maintain joint function. These classes are held at Anita's Dance Academy in King Street and facilitated by Charmaine Seccombe

Body Rhyme - Chinese Dance

Tuesdays for 6 weeks from 10th Feb  10.30 to 11.30am 

$50.00 or $10.00 per class if you want to attend casually

Say goodbye to Neck & Shoulder stiffness, lower back soreness, rounded shoulders and pelvic aneversion!  With gentle controlled movements, Body Rhyme Chinese Dance targets posture problems.    The slow safe exercises help repair your body and relax your mind letting you effortlessly achieve an upright posture and a relaxed state.  No dance experience needed. Classes are for 6 weeks commencing 10th February.  Facilated by Anita and held at Anita's Dance Academy, King Street, Upper Hutt.  The cost is $50.00 or $10.00 per class if you want to attend casually.

Calm Yourself - Managing Anxiety 

Please email us to express an interest to attend and we will contact you when we have a start date.

Introduction to some of the simple and wonderful techniques available to change your response to anxiety.  Understanding how the brain is "causing" anxiety and how by committing to some simple practices will help overcome and change it with some simple techniques.  Bring a curious mind to this hands-on workshop to learn tried and true methods to change the way your mind is working and start to take control of your mood.  The facilitator includes in her portfolio, The Havening and Neuro Linguistic Programming and has experience in these, and many more modalities that work with brain training and mind management.  Her background includes using these tools in her response to a mild brain injury and brings passion and personal experience to the sharing of these techniques.  Facilitated by Caroline Welkins and held at the Upper Hutt Women's Centre.

Coffee, Craft & Cake

Tuesday Mornings 10am to 12 noon - no cost

Thursday Afternoon 12.00 to 2.30pm - no cost

Come along to the Upper Hutt Women's Centre for our coffee (or tea) and craft morning or afternoon every Tuesday and Thursday during the school term.  Socialise with like-minded women where there are plenty of craft options available to try if you would like, or just come and enjoy a cuppa and a chat.  Stay as long as you like or come and go as it suits you.  Click on the email is button if you would like to know more or welcome to just pop along. Facilitated by Marita Maasss, held at the UH Women's Centre, 6 Sinclair Street and there is no cost to attend.

Line Dancing

Wednesdays for 8 weeks from 11th February       

10.30am to 11.30am $60 for or $10 casuals.

This is a fun class based on ballroom and Latin dance with a line dancing twist. It’s a great way to meet people whilst enjoying the benefits of a healthy physical activity. Classes are for eight weeks from 11th February.  Facilitated by Anita Perin-Zgomba and held at Anita’s Dance Academy.

Love to Sing

Wednesdays from 11th February 10.00am to 11.00am

$5 per class and just pay as you attend

Singing is an incredible way to reduce stress, improve your mood and bring some fun into your day. It can benefit you physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically. This class is for absolutely everyone - from those of you who feel you can't sing or lack confidence to sing, through to women who are confident singers.  This class is held at Beacon Hill Church, Hazel Street and facilitated by Joanne Roelofs.

Macrame

Macrame

Staff at the Women's Centre are loving this macrame revival and excited to be offering a workshop suitable for beginners and those with some experience.  Learn the knots to make a pot plant hanger and then make a beautiful wall hanging.  Guaranteed to be enjoyable and very addictive.  All materials are included in the cost of just $40.00.   Held at the Upper Hutt Women’s Centre

Mosaic Shapes

Mosaic Workshop

Introduction to mosaics, bring along any broken china you may have and transform them into a decorative outdoor paver. We also have some broken tiles that you are welcome to use.  Cost is $40.00 for the 4 hour workshop.  Held at the Upper Hutt Women’s Centre

Musical Theatre

Fridays for 6 weeks commencing 13th February 10.30am to 11.30am  $50.00

Dance, Act and Sing along to catchy number from a range of musicals in the fun, low impact dance class.  Warm-up exercises are based on Jazz dance and are beneficial for posture, balance, coordination, cardiovascular health, bone and muscle strength.  The sessions are suitable for those over 50, but all ages and experience levels are welcome.  Classes are for 6 weeks from 13th February.  Facilitated by Jacqui Beets and held at Anita's Dance Academy.

Pilates

 There will be no Pilates running in Term 1 but it will resume for Term 2. Click on the Email us link and we will keep you updated when we have a finalised start date.  

 

Pilates is a fantastic way to move the body in different directions to help you perform at your best whether it be in the gym, on the sports field, or to help you do your everyday tasks with ease. In these classes we will work through a whole body flow to leave you feeling centred, aligned and strong. Some options will be given to modify positions and you are welcome to select what is right for you.  Facilitated by Chelsea Mortiboy  and held at Anita's dance Academy.

Raranga Harakeke

We are offering a 4 hour workshop this term where you will begin preparing the flax ready to weave, then make some puti puti (flowers) and continue on to make a kono (4-sided basket).  The price is $40 per person which includes all materials and a light lunch.  Facilitated by Mihi Topou and held at the Upper Hutt Women's Centre.

Sewing

Mondays for 6 weeks from 16th February 11.30am to 1.30pm  $50.00

Mondays for 6 weeks from 16th February 6.30pm to 8.30pm $50.00 

Both beginners and people wishing to build on their existing skills are welcome to these classes. If you are a beginner the classes will involve learning how to sew.  Practice sewing in lines and experimenting with the different stitches, then cutting out fabric to complete a tote bag before embarking on a project of your own choice.   We have machines available to use or you are welcome to bring along your own. The cost is $50 for the 6 weeks and includes materials for the first project.  These classes are held at the Upper Hutt Women's Centre and facilitated by Joy Passey  

Adult Ballet Class

(ballet for more mature learners)

Mondays for 8 weeks from  9th February 10.30am to 11.30am. 

$60.00  or $10.00 per class if you want to attend causally.

The very popular low impact Silver Swans programme has been designed by the Royal Academy of Dance specifically for the more mature learner; however all ages and abilities are welcome to attend.  Ballet is a wonderful way to enhance mobility, posture, coordination and energy, with the benefits of cardiovascular health, muscle and bone strength and mental alertness.  As an art form ballet offers creative self expression, relaxation and joy.  Whether you danced in the past or always wanted to but never had the chance, now is the time!  Classes are suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.  Facilitated by Anita Perin-Zgomba  & Jacqui Beets and held at Anita’s Dance Academy.

Dance Fit and Latin Moves

Thursdays for 6 weeks from 12th February        

10.30 to 11.30am $50.00  or $10.00 for casuals.

Exercise is fun when you can dance!  

A good dance session gives you a great cardio workout and burns a surprising number of calories. Dancing is a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular fitness, builds muscle strength and endurance and enhances flexibility, balance and coordination.  Movement to music is boosting your mood, reducing stress, increasing self confidence and improving cognitive skills.  Classes are for 6 weeks starting 12th February. Facilitated by Anita Perin-Zgomba  and held at Anitas Dance Academy.  The cost is $50 or if you would prefer to come casually it is $10 per class.

Yoga for Greater Mobility

Mondays for 8 weeks from 9th February 10.00 to 11.00am $50.00

or $8 per class for casuals

This is a gentle seated class, focusing on breath and movement, ending with a relaxing meditation.  Facilitated by Janine Sarney and held at the Upper Hutt Womens Centre. The venue  is wheelchair friendly.

Yoga for Health & Energy

Mondays for 6 weeks from 16th February 6.30 to 7.25pm $50.00

for 6 weeks or $10 for casuals

A great way to improve your health and energy which focuses on flexibility, balance, strength, breathing, relaxation and meditation.  Classes are held for 6 weeks beginning 16th February.  Facilitated by Jannine Sarney and held at Anita's Dance Academy.  The cost is $50 or if you would prefer to come casually it is $10 per class
